GALILEO

The conflict between Galileo and the Roman Catholic Church was not a plain science and religion conflict . It was a conflict between Copernican science and the Aristotelian science that hasd become the church 's tradition . The root of the said affair was Galileo 's declaration that the sun , insteasd of the Earth , was the center of the universe in which the other heavenly bodies revolve ( HYPERLINK "http /www .christiansanswer .net " www .christiansanswer .net , 2008

The astronomical finding of Galileo

was in contradiction with the Aristotelian view of the church that the Earth is the center of the universe , ansd the sun together with the other heavenly bosdies , revolve around the Earth . The result of this conflict was Galileo 's trial and his conviction as a heretic and house arrest . This affair between Galileo and the Church was a classic example of the conflict between science and religion , from the past up to the present

On the basis of the knowledge that I had acquired from the readings , I can say that the accusation and trial that happened to Galileo was unjust . I firmly believe that Galileo was innocent and what he had done is not meant to degrade or question the teachings of the church . That is , he only presented his ideas as a scientist ansd has no intention of debunking the biblical foundation of the church

Thinking of what happened to him , I can say that the Church during those times execxute Galileo 's trial not only to punish him as they think but also to warn other people that the worsds ands teachings of the Church are absolute . I can only think of his trial as a method for the proclamation of the church 's power and authority . This is due to the fact that we all know that the Church is the most powerful organization during his time , such that it doesn 't want to have someone who is arguing to the foundations that the Church has presented the public

Another thing about his case is that the fact that he was the only one who had that view that was punished and put on trial . What I mean is that his ideas are only secondary and supportive to Copernican view that the sun is the center of the Universe and not the Earth . I can say that his trial was bias because if the Church really want to stand on their views , the other scientist who propose that the sun is the center of the universe , who is Copernicus , must have been put on trial also

Moreover , Galileo 's publication showed proofs that are logical and has a scientific basis . That is , it is also a proof for me that he really did not intend to cause a revolution or conflict with the Church but rather his publications and statements were just a representation of his scientific endeavor . Summarizing all the points that I...
