Functions of Management

Historically , management specialists used different approaches to defining general functions of management . According to the most common classification , the main functions of management are planning organizing , leading and controlling , but some specialists tend to include also other managerial roles , such as stuffing , motivation coordination , etc

Planning is a continuous process , which includes setting up various organizational objectives and goals , scheduling , specifying the amounts of the necessary recourses , etc . Planning is

aimed on combining the efforts of all the employees and directing them toward the attainment of the goals . This function helps managers to find the answers on the questions , where are we now , where do we need to go and how are we going to do this

The function of organizing includes the procedures of stuffing , resource allocation , specifying organizational structure and the structure of manufacturing process , distribution of the responsibilities and delegation of authority , defining communication models , etc . The main idea of this function is to create such managerial relations , which would provide the most effective connections between the all elements of organizational system

Leading embraces all the activities of managers directed on influencing and stimulating the employees to achieve organizational goals . From this perspective , such managerial roles as leadership , motivation and performance appraisal are playing key roles (Mescon , Albert Khedouri 1985 . The other important aim of this function is to create a favorable working environment and system of positive interpersonal relations

Finally , controlling is a function of supervising and monitoring how effectively the organization complies with managerial decisions made during the process of planning . In other words , controlling is an instrument , which helps to detect possible organizational problems , lack of resources or employees ' qualification , cost or standard variance etc , and find the most effective ways to solve possible problems
