The scientific tradition of counseling is one of the major factors that have greatly influenced and shaped my understanding on the practice of counseling . The scientific history of modern counseling dates back to time of Sigmund Freud , who was a trained neurologist who developed a variety of ways to deal with hysterical patients . Psychologists started focusing on what could be observed in the outside world instead of just looking at the internal behaviors of a person . Carl Rodgers is the other person who pioneered the scientific approach to counseling . Rodgers developed an approach that focused on the experience of an individual without taking on elaborate in addition to theoretical constructs that cannot be empirically tested . Humanistic branch of counseling was also tested (Mulhauser , 2010 . Rodgers who was not permitted by the psychiatric profession to regard himself as a psychotherapist adopted the term counseling . Rodgers later on turned out to be one of the most influential empirical scientists in the field of counseling . He introduced a variety of scientific modalities to psychology...
