Abstract

In spite of the multiple controversies surrounding the use of seclusion in managing psychiatric patients displaying elevated levels of activity its usage is commonplace in mental facilities . A review of the rationale in adopting the approach reveals that it is aimed at protecting the clinical environment , property and addressing the wellbeing of patients . A review of

the existing literature reveals that the use of seclusion in managing patients should be restricted for its rationale to be attained . The multiple health and psychological risks associated with poor seclusion decisions and policies place a requirement for objectivity in developing and implementing seclusion policies . Furthermore , the literature review reveals that there are multiple gaps in addressing factors that influence nurses in deciding to seclude a patient . On the other hand , decisions making in general clinical settings and variables that affect stability among psychiatric patient have been looked at from multiple dimensions . This gap forms the basis for the rationale of the study which is aimed at determining a set of requirements that nurses and policy makers have to consider in developing and implementing a seclusion policy . In general , a good seclusion policy is considered to be one that is objective , not based on punitive goals and minimises the frequency of seclusion .
