to what extent was Oedipus the author of his own dounfall?

In Oedipus the King ' the tragedy of the story comes from the original and most terrible sin of King Oedipus . As much as Oedipus seemed to insist on his own downfall , there is yet something still noble in that , as in the later plays Oedipus once great is blind and wandering . There is yet and still a somber reality to a very allegorical assessment of a ruler , a man judged great who later is judged to have cast his people down . As the priests lament , O never may we thus record thy reign

:-- 'He raised us up only to cast us down The inevitability of his destruction may appear to negate his responsibility , it certainly seems to make it challenging to assert that Oedipus was the author of his own downfall

As said by a supplicant subject about Oedipus , Blithe god whom we adore , The god whom gods abhor ' Oedipus is beloved by his people but disdained by the Gods . Could this clash of parallel universes influence how Oedipus is indeed to be portrayed ? Perhaps all but the most honest in his tidy world , realize that indeed there is something terribly wrong with Oedipus . That whatever his accomplishments may be , however impressive and fearsome they may be to the Thebans . They really don 't hold up very well in a wider context

At least with Oedipus there is something of a knower , that he killed the sphinx shows him to be very powerful . It was not he that wished...
