To what extent are the Characteristics of classic film noir different in comparison to the Characteristics of modern film noir?

Film Noir

Film Noir is a French term . It means `dark film ' in English . This phrase was coined by the

French film critics , to identify American films which symbolized and represented darkness . This

tries to define the term `film noir , examines the difference in the characteristics and

impact of classical film noir and the modern film noir

France was occupied by Germany during the second world war . A result , the Nazis had

banned screening of American films . The end of the second world war witnessed release of many p

American films , which were centered around a certain type of gloom desperation , and

frustration . The people of France noticed a notable shift in the attitude of Americans . The usually

pessimistic and cheerful mood was replaced by dull , optimistic mood . The American movies

reflected this . Several American movies of the 1940s reflected the frustration of the society

which victory in the second world war had brought . The heroes of these films played characters

which were frustrated due to lack of free will . The world was getting darker , or so thought the

film makers of the 1940s . The French film critics coined the phrase `film noir , for such films

and has since then , is considered to be a genre , in the cinematic history (Westcombe Roger , para

While it is very difficult to exactly define the type of films which full under this genre , in

general the thrillers , spy stories , action dramas and crime stories relate to this genre . These films

generally expressed shadows and bleakness . A very interesting fact underlying the genesis of

film noir , is that several German film maker , who had fled Germany and come to USA as

refugees , have a great hand in the creation of these films , during the 1940s .These names include

Frots Lang , Billy Wilder , Robert Siodmak , Edward Dmytryk and Fred Zinnemann . All of these

film makers contributed to the making of these films ( Westcombe Roger

It was not until the 1970s that the label given by the French to such films became widely

known . It was French judgment that anew type of films were emerging from America , which

were conveying few amazing realities of life , that were existing in the post war

America (Horsley Lee , para 2 ) These films , made during the 1940s and 1950s were termed as

the classic film noirs . The Hollywood producers got the required fuel from the who wrote

Lindsay Gresham , Horace McCoy and William Megivern were the who wrote rime

thrillers and whose main characters were violent , self deceiving men criminals , killers , crooked

cops or psychotics . As a writer , Cornell Woolrich has made significant contribution to the

development of film noir . Between 1942 and 1949 , eleven of his novels or stories were

converted into films . In `fear in the night , he main character is hypnotized to think that he is a

murderer and in ` night has a thousand eyes...
