Though he had won fame under the banner of knight errantry , he left the world as its denouncer . Why then such an optimistic epitaph for one who died rejecting all that he had formerly held to be good , true , and perfect ? The Alonso the Good of the last pages of Cervantes seems a completely transformed , disillusioned and different person than the knight he had so strived to become . This was neither a spontaneous nor an impetuous transformation . Like all the progressions of Quixote 's life , there were motivating factors behind each stage : the departure of a static existence in favor of knight errantry , the abandonment of chivalry to sanity , and death following the acquisition of sanity .
