African Americans have a tragic history . This history has created a legacy and stereotypes that do not represent success . They have had to work harder than any other ethnic group to erase the negativity and it seems that may be the reason that making a strong community

has been difficult . African Americans have a higher rate of imprisonment , murder and drug use when compared ethnic group . The question is why ? Have the effects of the slave mindset ruined their hopes of advancement ? Would the election of Obama change their status ? There have been strong leaders in their community and it seems their assignations only lead to greater bitterness

This group is represented by great success stories and powerful thinkers , such as Condaleeza Rice , Martin Luther King Jr . E .B . DuBois and George Washington Carver . They have been business and religious leaders and well as some of the most gifted musicians , artists , and actors . On the opposite side , the mortality of African American males is the highest of all ethnic groups . They seem to be imprisoned at younger ages and for crimes that are more serious than ever before They must learn to become a community or there will be no one left to support . The public perception of this group is poor and it is only confirmed by rising crime rates and news reports that show more and more black faces connected with these crimes

History

The history of African Americans in the United States began when in 1619 when a Dutch ship brought a group of slaves to the United States . Of all the ethnic groups , African Americans were the only ones to arrive on these shores against their will ( HYPERLINK "http /www .africanamericans .com " www .africanamericans .com ) Slavery has shaped the African American mindset more than any other event . The fact that reparations ' are still heavily debated is a sign of that As a group , they had to change from a slave mindset , try to find a place during the Reconstruction period , work through migration from a rural heritage to an urban lifestyle . In the 1950 's and 1960 's , the Civil Rights Movement gave this group a chance to legally achieve a fair playing field . However they are still working to achieve that reality That a people who have been here as long as the first European settlers should still find themselves in a subordinate position is a fact problematical both for assimilation theory and for public policy in this democratic nation (Faegin , 212
