John Cheever , in his work entitled The Housebreaker at Shady Hill provides us with considerably significant characterizations of what it means to be a human being by bringing to the fore issues which concern every human being ethics . Whether we are theists , atheists or agnostics , there is still a felt need to articulate what it means for our actions to be right or wrong

In most of his works , Cheever depicts the lives of people from the suburban middle-class stratum of society and the hardships that they encounter . In the Housebreaker of Shady Hill , it is important to note that Cheever has a very positive outlook regarding the nature of human beings that is , that human beings are intrinsically good . This intrinsic goodness of human beings however , is challenged by the different moral conflicts that an individual experiences in the real world which is partly brought about by the complexity of various web of networks and interlocking expectations that we have both from others and from ourselves

Johnny Hake is one such individual who , at a certain point , got lost in the complex web of networks and interlocking expectations of society Like many of us , Johnny is vulnerable to making the wrong choices . When Johnny was forced out of his job with the company he has worked so hard for in so many years , he found it difficult to deal with his financial problems . His checks started bouncing . He resorted to stealing when an opportunity came a way out of their misery . This occurred when he and his wife , Christina , were invited to a party at one of their richest neighbours at Shady Hill the Warburtons . The proud Mrs . Warburton talks about how much money her husband usually has on him . Having learned this , Johnny sneaked back into the house and took with him a sum of nine hundred dollars from Warburton 's wallet in his pocket while everyone they were asleep

What is important for Cheever though is not precisely the questions which answer the `what ' but the `why .
