Sigmund Freud argued that human development is primarily driven by motives and emotions . These motives and emotions are kept hidden in the early stages of development and fully explicates during the adolescent stage . For Freud , these emotions and motives are fully expressed in the so-called Id ' or the irrational part of man 's consciousness

For contextual theorists , human development

arises from the current relationships between the changing organism (the human being ) and the rapidly changing world . Changes in the person create changes in his /her environment . Changes in the environment influence changes in the individual . Contextual theorists argued that human development is caused both by the environment and physiology For Erikson , human development is simply influenced by social factors These social factors heavily influenced the formation of the ego (note that the ego is relatively weak in the early stages of human development .
