Analysis of Cathedral

Cathedral ' by Raymond Carver , is a short story about an intimate relationship between two distant people , which brings hopes in despair The short tale demonstrates how an unforeseen event can change the way we look at life . Through the story , Carver describes how people living so close , can be distant and how two people , staying miles apart , can still be close at heart . The beauty of the story lies in the bond shared by the narrator 's wife and Robert , the blind man . They worked together for a short

period of time but their relationship continues through tapes they record and send to each other . They helped each other when times were bad the tapes were the only hopes for them to continue the journey of life . They are close to each other by their thoughts and Robert knows more about the narrator 's wife than the narrator himself The blind man , Robert , seems to have an amazing sense of optimism within him . Even after being sightless , he sees things beautifully with his inner vision . Robert 's wife had just died , and he cannot see but still he seems to be more enthusiastic towards life , rather than the narrator himself
