Introduction

The case chosen for this analysis is New Jersey v . T .LO . argued on March 28 , 1984 and decided on January 15 , 1985 by the Supreme Court of New Jersey . This case is one of the most important cases in the field of education as it sets the precedent that probable cause is not necessary to search a student and that reasonable suspicion is enough to search a student 's belongings . The United States Supreme Court used

it to set a lower standard for searches and seizures conducted by school officials on school property . Even though the court recognized that the students in non-adult school settings have expectations of privacy , it did not see those expectations with the same value as the expectations of adult students in schools . The decisions made in this case continue to have their relevance on our education system today , as school officials continually have to face issues surrounding drugs and other forms of contraband in schools
