The story `A mid-summer night dream ' by Shakespeare explores the nature of love through various characters and narrates the tragedy of true lovers who killed themselves . Pyramus killed himself after thinking that his love Thisby had been consumed by a lion . This tragic theme however is surrounded with humor hence appears less serious . This comic technique used by Shakespeare is brought out through the play within a play and the fairies (Tanya Linda 32-35

The story opens with the festival of entertainment in

preparation for the marriage of Theseus who was the Duke of Athens to queen Hippolyta Egeus who was a nobleman in Athens is marching to Theseus court in to marry of his daughter Hermia to Demetrius though she is in love with Lysander . Hermia is then warned by the Duke of the consequences of disobeying her father . This decision prompts Lysander and Hermia to escape letting their intentions known to Helena who is in love with Lysander hence tells Demetrius of their elopement . Both Helena and Demetrius follow the two in the woods where the Athenian craftsmen were rehearsing a play which they could perform to the Duke and his bride (Shakespeare 238 -239

In the same woods was also a band of fairies among them Oberon their king and Titania his queen who had come to bless the marriage of the Duke . Titania was at loggerheads with Oberon for opposing him to turn an Indian prince she had been offered...
