Domestic violence refers to any act of violence between family members This may be in the form of sexual , physical , emotional , economic or psychological abuse . The will to gain dominance , power and control over one individual is one of the many reasons for Domestic violence

Perceived as the weaker sex ' women can easily become a victim of domestic violence . Although men are always stereotyped as the abuser

br they can also be a victim of domestic violence . Domestic abuse can have lasting effects on the victims . The effects can be physical and psychological . It can be detrimental to their socialization

Domestic violence has always been present in society . It has been one of the causes of broken marriages and family . It is sad to note that domestic abuse is perpetrated by the person closely related to the victim . The physical and emotional traumas that the victims experienced will leave them scarred for a lifetime

Being victimized is never easy and the effect can last a lifetime . This violence is indeed a private family matter but should be brought up to higher and legal ground to rightfully punish the abusers and give justice to the victims

Although women are more likely to become victims of domestic violence there are men who suffer from it as well . Domestic abuse has lasting physical , psychological , and social effects on the victim . It may also affect the children of the victim . Thus , recovery from such trauma may take time . However , constant communication with loved ones and psychological therapy can ease their recovery

Defining Domestic Violence

Domestic violence refers to any violent act between family members This includes child abuse , elder abuse , wife beating and battering , and any other abuse that occurred within the family . Thus , domestic violence does not necessarily involve physical abuse . Domestic abuse can constantly happen while physical abuse happens occasionally . Psychological form of domestic violence may involve intimidation , harassment , damage to property , threats , and financial abuse (Domestic Violence Policy 2008

Selfish motives may trigger an individual to perform domestic violence For instance , in romantic relationships , too much love can cause a person to become obsessed to and overprotective of his or her partner which may result in violence .
