Malaria

Malaria is an infectious parasitic disease that is caused by Plasmodium transmitted by mosquitoes as the vectors . This killer disease dates back to the days of the Egyptian mummies as splenomegaly has been observed in mummies as old as three thousand years old . Sherman (p 3 ) reports that there have been positive malaria antigens from mummies of the 3200 to 1304 B .C . In addition , there are records of cuneiform writings as old as

br four thousand years indicating intermittent fever in the Tigris and River Euphrates region . The observed symptoms are indicative of the presently well known malaria symptoms thus providing evidence that malaria is as old as more than 3 ,000 years ago . With Africa being noted as the main source of malaria , the disease spread to other parts of the world such as Europe , Asia , and eventually to virtually every other continent in the world

Currently , malaria is a worldwide concern with about 3 .3 billion people being at risk of malaria infection . Annual malaria morbidity is estimated to be 250 million cases whereas 1 million deaths (WHO Fact Sheet 94 , para 1 . In the United States , malaria is almost entirely eradicated thus it is not considered as a very serious disease . It is unfortunate that malaria is serious disease in developing countries especially in Africa . The sub-Saharan Africa is particularly affected seriously by malaria affecting both children and adults
