Discussion Questions : Week 4

Large organizations are , as a general rule , more formalized than smaller organizations because of their very nature . The smaller unit is capable of a hands-on approach to management while the larger organization would collapse under its own weight without the benefit of a strong center or a rigid and formal structure . The larger organization must have a clearly delineated chain of command whereas in a smaller organization the head of the operation has both the time and the inclination to make decisions and settle disputes as their arise

. This is simply not possible in a large organization due to time constraints The formality of the larger organization gives it the ability to make and hand down decision much more rapidly than would be possible should it lack that formality and try to run itself in piece-meal fashion Management would be forced to spend too much energy simply putting out the brush fires and have no time left to run the operation

Organizational design is an operating system , or method , based on the idea that optimum results can be achieved by studying the needs of the organization to analyze the structure , weeding it of all superfluous programs and allowing only that which is vital to its operation to be left in place . This restructures the organization and puts it in a better position to meet its goals and its mission statement

The designs of small and large criminal organizations , as a general rule , differ in the way in which they are structured . The small criminal group is more likely to be run by one man and he will make all decisions . He will not choose to delegate authority , but rather take a hands-on approach to day-to-day operations . On the other hand a large criminal organization will have a second-in-command and lieutenants capable of making decisions and giving s without having to wait for an from top management
