Ideology is essential to understanding social science . Whether on a micro level (familial ) or a macro level (governmental , every social group has a set of norms and values by which they are identified . Idea 's and ideals differ in many respects . While ideology begins with an idea such as Karl Marx 's idea of a Utopian society , ideals stem from these ideas and in political terms becomes imposed on the public . What has brought about a new consideration for me is that it was previously accepted that Marxist theory was the penultimate of ideology , but this may not be true . What became apparent to me , and important , is the fact that regardless of the nature of ones beliefs , we are brought up with a set of ideals . For example , Max Weber wrote about Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism , that suggests that Capitalism may be an ideology in itself . Man 's search for the ideal living circumstances now stretches beyond the basic needs , namely : food , shelter , education medical and security . Ultimately Weber sees that the major difference between Marxian communist belief and capitalist ethnomethodology is that while Marxist theory focuses on collectivity , Protestantism focuses on the individual .
