In Nevada , on the other hand , any person less than 18 years old is eligible to undergo the system and will be treated as an adult if he /she is at least 14 years old . In most counties of Nevada (except Clark County , the District juvenile courts oversee secure detention facilities and probation while in New York private agencies or County commissions manage the system and detention facilities . In addition , New York has home or community (non-secure detention facilities run by private social service organizations Nevada 's District Courts have jurisdiction of trial proceedings while New York has Family Courts to hear juvenile cases . In both states juveniles are placed in detention facilities to await final judgment . In Nevada , the facilities could also serve as a sanction for violating probation but this is not applicable in New York wherein the violator is referred to the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS
In assessing criminal behavior , a New York police can arrest the offender and take him /her directly to the Family Court or may issue an appearance ticket for the youth to report to the county probation department . In Nevada , the arresting officer must immediately refer the youth to the probation department . The two states share similar initial screening process where the probation officer interviews all concerned and then recommends the findings to the district attorney who will sign the petition for court proceedings . Probation departments of both states are likewise authorized to investigate and endorse what kind of remedies will be given to juveniles . In Nevada , offenders will undergo at least 180 days of community services , educational training , anger management and human development programs that improve communication and learning skills . In New York , these youths will undertake 60 days of community services , counseling , mentoring , substance abuse and behavioral programs . However , the number of days can be extended for another 60 upon the court 's approval
The District Courts in Nevada supervises the probation while New York has the County probation departments to administer the supervision . New York 's Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives manages all probation departments throughout New York . Both states , however , develop individualized services to suit the needs of the juveniles .
