Anne 's optimism contrasts Peter Van Daan 's initial pessimism . Rather quiet and bewildered by the sudden turn in his life , he spends much time locked in his own room . Anne gradually develops a romantic interest in Peter and convinces him not to succumb to pessimism but to hope for a better future . On dates limited to going from room to room , they talk share ideas , and support each other

Frank 's problems with her mother and with Mr . Dussel continue to make her miserable , and

her loneliness becomes harder to bear "I only look at her as a mother , and she just doesn 't succeed in being that to me I have to be my own mother . I 've drawn myself apart from them all I am my own skipper and later on I shall see where I come to land . All this comes about particularly because I have in my mind 's eye an image of what a perfect mother and wife should be and in her whom I must call 'Mother ' I find no trace of that image " pg . 41

Peter is an awkward , self-conscious sixteen-year-old boy . In contrast to Frank , Peter is quiet and generally keeps his thoughts and feelings to himself . In his patrol duties , Peter demonstrates that he is brave and dependable . His tender side is evident in the way he takes care of his cat , Mouschi , and the office cat , Boche

Peter enjoys his relationship with Frank , but he never fully opens up to her . He prefers solitude and has little in common with Frank beyond their unusual living situation

In an effort to combat loneliness and to feel understood by someone Frank strikes up a relationship with Peter . Where she once found him lazy and boring , she now finds him sweet and in need of a friend . The more Frank visits Peter in his room , the more their parents become concerned about the propriety of such visits . Mr . Frank eventually tells Anne he thinks she should stop visiting Peter so much , to which Anne responds with a letter telling her father that she there is no option for her in forgetting about Peter
