The Desire for a Home

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the first volume of Maya Angelou 's autobiography . Its impressive scope and sophistication attract the reader 's attention from the first words . In an engaging and accessible style it shows the main events which happened in the life of the author It depicts what sufferings she had to go through , and how she was overcoming all the obstacles which life placed in front of her

In the novel the author is doing her best to show her ideal of

happiness- having her own home , peace on her mind and love and care from parents . It took Maya a long time to come to the point when she reached this goal but after overcoming the obstacles , she achieved it

The most painful feeling is Maya 's childhood is the idea of abandonment by her parents which does not put her mind at ease for a long time

The feeling of abandonment by her Mother and Father is on Maya 's mind since the early days of her childhood . It never puts her mind at ease The novel shows that Maya has never really lived with her parents . She has her brother Bailey and Mamma who are helping her greatly and supporting her , but she so much wants to live with parents , to get care and love from them

The appearance of Mother and Father in Maya 's life does not bring happiness in it and ruins her hopes for a happy future with parents . In some time , Mother and Father appear in Maya 's life and she thinks she would be very happy from that time on . However , her relationship with them turns out very controversial . The greatest irony is that only new sufferings start for Maya when her Father appears and takes her away from Mamma . He is coming and leaving and that gives an impression to poor Maya that she did something wrong

The rape of Maya by her Mother 's boyfriend shows her that even life in her Mother 's house could not be as happy and beautiful as Maya used to imagine . When Maya starts living with her Mother , she thinks it is the beginning of a happy life but it brings lots of pain to her

Maya 's desire for a home is well-depicted through the locations where she lives , and people who are around her

The first place where Maya 's first years of childhood go is Stamps . She doesn 't feel she belongs there . Maya doesn 't feel she will stay for a long time in the town because she wants a different place to live in When her teacher is trying to get her to remember the words to a song and the children are giggling at her forgetfulness , Marguerite can only think about how the words relate to her own life in the town "I didn 't come to stay " HYPERLINK "http /www .bookrags .com /notes /ikwc /QUO .htm...
