According to the National Institute of Mental Health (2009 , depression is a serious medical condition . A person who is depressed may not feel like his or her usual self . He or she may look hopeless or sad all the time even if there is no apparent reason to be sad about and may feel that everything in the world is worthless . Most depressed persons contemplate on committing

suicide while others actually perform this act thinking that death can solve all of their problems . It may appear that a depressed person may often show changes in his or her behavior and spend most of their time pigging out on the kitchen . To these persons the food may taste so delectable that they are able to forget why they are depressed in the first place and thus prefer to have their mouths filled with food all the time that ultimately results in their obvious weight gain . Some depressed persons , on the other hand , have no appetite and not take in food at all . Depressed persons also have changes seen in the way that they sleep .
