As of 2006 concensus , Canada is home to about one million , two hundred thousand (1 .2M ) aboriginal people which represent dozens of different histories , language and cultural traditions . This comprises about 3 of the population which is still very significant . The country has been publicly criticized by the United Nations for its treatment of indigenous people . According to the UN , Canada failed to address child poverty and housing crisis and the UN highlighted the impact these issues have on indigenous people . Indigenous rights today are quickly becoming a global issue

2007 , the UN announced the adoption of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples . This is linked to the preservation of human rights , environment sustainability and protection of cultural diversity More and more , Canada 's policies on indigenous issues are being placed on a global spotlight

Since the global movements are challenging Canada to a deeper understanding of indigenous people 's lives , groups suchs as Working Group on Indgenous Populations were created , amplifying the voices of these marganilized group . This group can help the non-working group understand further the importance of indigenous issues

Also , The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT of Canada now includes International Indigenous Affairs as inclusion to its foreign srategy and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA ) now financess ventures to support Indigenous peoples all over the world , through the Indigenous Peoples Partnership Program (which bonds Aboriginal people in Canada with Indigenous peoples abroad
