Abstract Death penalty has been a very controversial issue in the world . The nature and essence of this form of punishment as enforced by some countries in this world hold far too many implications to the citizens to the leaders and to the whole society as well . Most of those who adhere to death penalty see it as something that will better improve society . The fact is that death penalty has been in practice for several centuries now . It has been perceived as an accepted fact and a common part of the

society as seen in the world 's history . Fortunately , the advent of human rights and the influence these rights have brought to the world have changed and have been continually changing the attitude and notion towards the understanding with regard to death penalty Despite this , there are still numerous accounts that illustrate the disheartening reality that some prisoners who have been executed have actually been innocent . Therefore , although the purpose of enforcing death penalty has been for the improvement and protection of the society , in truth , this form of punishment actually brings more harm than good and further poses a substantial threat to society Death Penalty , Doing More Harm than Good
It is undeniable that societies are plagued with countless atrocities and petty faults . Sometimes the task of dealing with such facts is quite unfathomable and overly daunting . On one hand , society grasps the myriad task of balancing the very safety and security of each person living in it . On the other hand , the society struggles to grip the heavy responsibility of dealing with those who infringe and disturb the balance instilled . Therefore , some countries have responded by enforcing the death penalty with the knowledge that by enforcing a severe punishment , the number of crimes will be alleviated or even eliminated But notwithstanding this reality , this has not brought about the aims that it has been intended to do . It is therefore the purpose of this short discourse to explain why the death penalty is to be abolished
If the people of today take a lesson from the past , then it will be quite obvious that having a death penalty enforced is not advantageous to society . This form of punishment is so old that it has been traced in historical evidence like the Code of Hammurabi . The system of law and justice that exists in most nations of the world today is not as different from the Code of Hammurabi . The current legal systems in place today also show the same progression in their laws , and perhaps even subjecting the guilty to even harsher penalties such as the death penalty for being found guilty of plunder (King , 2007 . The problem here lies in fact that the society and the people of today as compared to the past are different in so many aspects . This makes the laws or policies which are founded on old and even ancient ideas not practical and compatible
