Paper Topic:

Have dating and sex norms changed

A Survey on Whether Norms in Dating and Sex have Changed

Introduction

The aspect of sociology that I have studied here is in the area of human social interactions . Man as a social being had established behavioral standards that govern social behavior in social interactions known as norms . These behavioral standards dictate gender roles of behavior , on what is acceptable and not acceptable in certain situations or cases . In others words , norms acts as guides of social behavior and therefore served also as the means by which certain behaviors are criticized

Lindesmith et . al 400 . In the field of human social interactions specifically in the area of dating and sex one of the norms is that male are the initiators , the first one to make the first moves in dates while the female just waits for an invitation and then either decline or accept that invitation . Norms , however , may change with time , in accordance with the acquisition of new knowledge , new ideas , new attitudes and new skills . Therefore , what may not be acceptable behavior today may become acceptable tomorrow . In this context , I would like to find out if dating and sex behavior in modern times between male and female have changed

This research will attempt to answer the question : Have dating and sex norms changed ? To arrive to a conclusive answer I find it relevant to determine the answer to the following questions first : Who initiates the dates ? Who pays ? Who decides what takes place during the date ? Who initiates sex (if there is any

Procedural Details The research method used is the survey method . I have to use this method because unlike personal interviews , the survey method makes it easier for me to get honest answers because they are less confrontational . Moreover , they are easy to be conducted for questionnaires are just distributed to the respondents . In the survey , respondents answer the questions by selecting from possible choices provided after the question

The research took place on campus at Santa Barbara City College outside of the cafeteria in a Friday afternoon . The place and time was especially selected because students from any background , gender , race interests and age converged here . Because of that , I have confidence that the result of my survey is not biased since at least I have the representative sample of all types of youths in dating practice in American society today . Therefore , views or opinions of American youths on dating and sex are accounted for . The people I had chosen to answer the survey composed of 50 young single (ages 18-25 ) college students (50 male and 50 female ) on dating practices at Santa Barbara City College . In selecting my samples , I stood outside the cafeteria and distributed questionnaires to singles as they come in
