This is a report on a research by Dr Julie Wilson , a researcher at the Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of the West of England . Dr Wilson considers backpacking a sub-culture and has examined the phenomenon in detail discovering that there are different styles

of backpackers as well as backpacker rituals . She says that modern backpackers are more independent and organised than those from the past They no longer trail around solo using different kinds of transport , but fly to big cities with a considerable amount of money , a guidebook and some e-mail addresses . In this globalised world , they tend to get together with other backpackers to share experiences and , in some way to create a psychophysical safe haven , a way to feel at home
