The Power of Consumerism

On the surface it would appear that these are two very different essays with a very different focus , but that 's kind of the point of comparison we have to do more than look at how things appear on the surface , we need to learn to do our research and find the truth in what appears before us

Jesse Jackson 's essay Who Makes the Clothes We Wear ' is about working conditions in the retail fashion industry . He discusses the harsh and unfair working conditions of the individuals

put in place to perform the interior functions of making the clothes that have been designed for us to wear . He speaks about the exploitation of manufacturing warehouse employees . According to Jackson these people are not afforded a living wage , their right to organize and improve working conditions is being suppressed , they don 't even get to exercise activities necessary to healthy function like going to the bathroom during work hours . These people suffer daily just so that we can have the latest designer labels on our backs and feet

Twitchell 's article is more so about the commercialism of modern culture it 's about how we are bombarded with advertising information about every little thing , and Twitchell is absolutely right . As consumers we should do more research and decide on the best products to buy dependent upon our needs and what is important to us . We should gather all of the available information , decide what is best...
