The current state of corrections in the U.S. In your opinion, what are the most significant challenges? How can they be overcome?
The US Correction System The correction system in the US has been under criticism by policymakers , politicians and scientists , because of its inability to rehabilitate prisoners . The government has been undertaking research , to establish effective corrective implementation of programs in the system Due to mandatory sentencing procedures , focus is more on harsh punishments than rehabilitation . The system performs only two of its functions effectively as per the American sentencing guidelines i .e retribution and incapacitation . They do not deter crime or educate prisoners . The system has failed in dealing with issues

related to crime and punishment
The most significant challenge is overcrowding , this is due to a growing number of drug related incidences . With the mandatory sentencing guidelines , most of them are incarcerated . To overcome overcrowding , the system should deal with drug addicts differently instead of giving them prison sentences . They should be placed in rehabilitation centers to undergo treatment After all many of them continue to use the drugs while incarcerated and when freed . So locking them up does not solve the problem . Millions of Americans today are struggling with a drug addiction and abuse of some sort and unless we focus on treatment and rehabilitation , we will continue overcrowding the prisons . This leads to yet another challenge of spending a lot of taxpayer 's money in incarcerated person 's .e .g . the state Oregon has the highest budget for prisons , yet very little is spent on educating them on how to engage in positive lifestyles in the society...
