During the 20th century , two compelling reasons forced Mexicans to cross the b into the United States : the revolution in Mexico , and the belief that the strong economy of the United States at the time could give them a much better life . The town of El Paso in Texas served as their gateway to their new life . According to U .S . Immigration estimates , b crossing tripled from 200 ,000 to 600 ,000 between 1910 and 1930 . The Great Depression of the 1930s , with its attendant severe unemployment and food shortages , was a very difficult time for Mexican immigrants . Many of them were forcefully deported while those who were left behind , mostly farmworkers , struggled under very harsh economic conditions . During the Second World War , as the war industry acquired most of the available labor force , American farmers , with the help of the government , recruited contract farmworkers from Mexico who became known as braceros . These braceros were very poorly treated , especially in Texas , and worked under subhuman conditions despite being given very low salaries . Most of these braceros were later deported back to Mexico after the war (Immigration .Mexican ) Chew-Sanchez (n .d ) asserted that historically , Mexicans have been , and continue to be , the main target of anti-immigrant efforts by the United States government as well as by people practicing open racism
