Article Review : Dipole Moments

Understanding the conformation of a protein is extremely important in understanding how that protein operates within a protein system . In addition , each protein carries its own net charge and dipole moment These charges directly related to how the protein operates . Therefore by knowing the charges associated with each protein the specific structural features of that protein as well as the function can be determined . This group of researchers have created a database which helps to calculate the net charges on

proteins as well as dipole moments and vectors , and the radius of protein structure . The database can be found at http /bip .weizmann .ac .il /dipol This server is also gives access to angles between a specific dipole and the surrounding amino acids within the same protein . In previous research it was determined that while dipole moments are important , once calculated they are similar within the whole class of proteins . It was shown that the charge of protein did not determined or give evidence to the function of structure of that proteins . In other words , all proteins have relatively the same net charge . The presence research focuses on proteins ' electrostatic properties which appear to extremely specific to the protein in question

This is because protein molecules have large surface areas which has long regions of positive or negative potentials which researchers believe might be important to the function of that protein . These areas are created by an excess of positive or negative ions . These excesses create an imbalance and therefore , a large dipole moment . Examination of electrostatic properties is now routinely performed for most new protein structures that are solved . However , the process is extremely long , intricate , and not always successful . However , the calculation of net charges and dipole moments are much easier to conduct . This information can help categorize the protein and reveal function inspiring electrostatic properties . Experimental measurement of protein dipole moments needs advanced equipment which is not easily accessed

This group of research created a tool for the server which can perform the above calculations . This is useful to explore the potential link between the dipole moment of protein and its conformation , as well as calculating mass moments , and the geometric average of those mass moment

Once the experiments were performed it was clear that there were no real connections between net charges , dipoles or however atoms residues , or radius . Similarly , there was no link between the above variables and the function of the molecule being worked on . Even large molecules that seemed to have huge charges (both positive and negative there was no pattern which pointed toward function or structure . While the researchers will continue to explore different molecules the results in this particular project are do not point to a relationship between electrostatic charges and function or form

It is clear from the results that any link between a dipole moment the molecular function is based on the specific binding proteins of that particular protein . Therefore , there...
