Though some say that Christianity is not really a religion and instead a special and intimate relationship with Christ , it is widely used to refer a group or association which shared common beliefs on Jesus Christ , The Death and Resurrection of Christ , Salvation , Holy Trinity , Purgatory , and Virgin Mary (Welburn , 2004 . The Church is regarded as the prime institution which upholds all the Christian doctrines and traditions . Christianity as the Word 's Leading Religion According to a world report , Christianity is the leading religion in terms of the number of its followers - that is almost 33 of the population across the globe (Johnson , 2005 . Christianity is the major religion in European countries , America , Philippines , Australia , and Southern Africa . Reports also show that some countries like in Asia (China and South Korea ) and in Middle East with chief inclination with Islam , Hinduism , and Buddhism religions are starting to be in association with the Christian religion . Many believe that Christianity itself is derived from Judaism since the latter 's theological doctrines and canons are almost similar with that of Christianity . But in the Bible , the beginning of Christianity started on the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Twelve Apostles . Christianity : Jesus Christ and the Apostles Generally , Christianity commenced during the first century after the death of the Christ in Jerusalem . It started as a mere Jewish sect and then it eventually reached the whole Roman Empire and other nations outside of it such as Armenia , Ethiopia , Assyria , India , Iran , Georgia and China . It extended in almost all parts of the world and ultimately becomes the leading religion in the world (Fisher , 2007 . The first Christian Church was said to be the group led by the apostles of Jesus Christ and their relatives According to the Bible , when God rose on the third day after His death , he commanded His followers to spread his teachings (Fisher , 2007 .
