The police department is given the mandate

to ensure the maintenance of law and in the society . It is the duty of the police force to ensure that individuals have a room to enjoy their rights and freedoms but it also ensures that in doing so , they don 't interfere with the rights and freedoms of others
In to perform their duties effectively , the police force is given some powers over the public . They are given power to arrest and contain anyone who is suspected to be a criminal . This power over individual is important to ensure that there is respect of law and recognition of the existence of the police force with the mandate to enforce law (Delattre ,1996
However this power has been misused by the police force in most instances . Incidences of arbitrarily arrest and containment in police cells for more than the recommended number of hour before being aligned in court have been reported all over the world . This has been a great issue of concern not only to the police force but also to the government and the public as well . Abuse of police power by some police officers has created enmity between the police and the public
To ensure that police don 't misuse this power when dealing with the public , code of ethics for policing has been put in place . The code of ethics provides guidelines for the police to carry out their duties in the recommended way . During training police are introduced to the code of ethics which is supposed to guide their operations
With the incidences of police corruption now rampant , the code of ethics in policing has become more important than ever . The police force has failed the test of time in maintaining integrity while carrying out their duties and high rate of corruption has dented the image of the disciplined force . Police professionalism has been dented by incidence of corruption , police brutality and other practice which calls for immediate review of the police training in to restore their image Everywhere in the world , police administration has been fighting police deviance in trying to inculcate good conductor to the members which will enable them to serve the public well . Police ethics is one of the most important components of their training which helps to reduce incidences of corruption and brutality , and also helps to introduce professionalism
