Joseph Hazelwood , the captain of the ill-fated Exxon Valdez oil carrier , left the bridge of the ship and left the handling of the gargantuan vessel to one of his unlicensed crew . As the ship continued on its course , the ship plowed into a reef and unleashed 11 million gallons of oil into the water . This triggered one of the worst environmental tragedies in the history of the United States .
