Counseling

Introduction

This report throws light on how a mother of a five year old daughter with behavioral problems approaches a counselor for solutions to her interrupted sleepless nights . How should a counselor approach such counseling sessions ? How should a client be treated during the counseling session ? `Helping Rose ' is a transcript of a counseling session between Rose , the mother , and Dr . Berenson , the counselor . This seeks to elucidate the rights and wrongs of the method employed by Dr . Berenson in meeting Ms . Rose . Dr . Berenson employs the helping model

to help Ms . Rose overcome her fear of being overtly eccentric on countering her five year old daughter 's pranks at night . In the chapter `Rational Problem Solving and its Limitations ' a rational to problem solving consists of four distinct stages and steps . They are

The First stage involves questioning the problem /opportunity and ownership . The Second stage is about goal setting and commitment to goals . The third stage is all about strategies to accomplish the mission . In practice , the three stages overlap and interact with one another as clients struggle to manage problems and develop opportunities . How does Dr . Berenson as a counselor , help Ms . Rose her in her effort to overcome her fears or apprehension

This is what this seeks to elicit through the use of the transcript on the session between the two

Rose , a woman and mother of a five year old daughter , has come to seek the guidance and counseling of Dr . Berenson , a male counselor . Her daughter would wake up frequently during the night and cry to get her mother 's attention and caring . But her daughter at five , continuing her cries at night just did not seem natural

Rose tried to use reinforcements to keep her quite and busy , and sleep well during the nights , but this had little effect on the child . Not successful , she felt that she was losing control over the situation and sought Dr . Berenson 's help

`Helping Rose ' has a lot of shortfalls in the making . A counselor must be able to carefully examine his /her client 's situation before making or providing a solution . This is an area of serious concern in cases related to psychoanalysis . The transcript shows the counselor interrupting the client (Rose ) very often in the middle of her argument and judgment . This goes to show that , Dr . Berenson , a qualified counselor , lacks the basic qualities of handling such sensitive cases . A counselor must be able to relate and correlate according to the situation that is easily acceptable to his /her client . In the case of the transcript analysis , Dr . Berenson failed in his duty by interrupting his client , who could have revealed more information to help solve the problem

He conducted the session with the assumption that what he knew was more than enough to diagnose the problem faced by Ms . Rose . These shortcomings are more than amply reflected in the transcripts taken from the interview below...
