Corrections in America

All through the years , the social has sought after remote aspirations for its correctional institutions , aiming for perhaps satisfying the victims of the transgressions made by offenders . At least for the time being also , those we think who have done such offenses can no longer harm us . We cannot deny however , that there many of us who have observed instances that prisons have not done its share of rehabilitating or reforming , of achieving what we have dreamt they were supposed to accomplish . In the time that passed , many would

say that prisons have been a notorious failure at achieving our hopes and dreams (Rogers 1989 Tonry 2004 . These days , we barely even entertain the idea of our nation 's diligence to enforcing and executing its obligations in the continued transformation of our state prisons (Cullen Gilbert 1982 , and awkwardly allow the continued building of more prisons every year (Irwin Austin 1997 ) that function more or less like miniature warehouses . Corrections must be acknowledged as an essential constituent of a mutually supporting and harmonized arrangement of justice recognized in relation to the function of social control in humanity . The depressing concerns include the overcrowding predicament the financial and budgetary damages , bigger prisoner court proceedings the lopsided incarceration of minorities (especially juveniles , the revolving door of recidivism , AIDS and disease epidemics , aging wrongdoers with special needs , and correctional worker stress . There possibly will be a several tactics to approach these challenges : one , to create a "task force " to study corrections and two , to consider the problems . The proposal of the President 's Commission entailed all segments of society in focusing upon the lawbreaker , including the universities . Universities are pivotal in the educational development and the best way of advancing correctional programs may be through educating prison personnel . Likewise , it remains to be seen whether and how grassroots restorative and community justice initiatives can be reconciled with sentencing laws and institutions . My outlook is that both public safety ' and restorative justice ' have significance as ideas around which the future of community corrections possibly will join together , and that opposing ideas do not . Experience advises that under these circumstances , the operational faculty of community corrections will remain for some time to fall short of what the ambitious new ideas require , but that efforts to apply them in practice will move the field to another , improved , but still intermediary performance level
