The Case for the Legalization of Prostitution

Prostitution has been regarded as the earliest profession in history and then until now it holds a pejorative status because of what it implies . Prostitution is the performance of sexual acts in return for compensation , be it monetary or in kind . Usually sexual intercourse is paid with money , but performing sex in return for illegal drugs is not unheard of . Generally prostitution is regarded as demeaning and exploitative , and an anomaly in society . Prostitutes get no respect , no security , no benefits , and in most cases

all over the world , they are seen as dirty women

In this , I put forward a stand for legalizing prostitution for several reasons . First , I believe that prostitutes are not victims or bad persons they are individuals who have rights just like everybody else , and they should be able to enjoy their rights . Second , the problem of prostitution persists because it is treated as something to be eradicated thus prostitution is at large illegal , but its existence continues , creating a vicious cycle of poverty . Third , prostitution is a form of trade , and should be treated as one . Fourth , problems related with prostitution will be better addressed if prostitution is regulated

Society often considers prostitutes as lower-class citizens because of the nature of their work , often times they are considered outside of society . Just because they perform services sexual in nature does not make them any less of a human being , and certainly what they do does not strip them of their rights . But prostitutes suffer because they are stigmatized as victims and /or bad people . If society continually looks at them and treats them as such , then they will always be victims of circumstance . Prostitution will not thrive if there is no market for it so let us stop washing our hands and pointing the finger at them . We need to change our conception of prostitution and of ourselves . Instead of looking at them as victims or as actors outside society , we should look at them as people doing their jobs to survive , just like everybody else who earns a living . If we see them as they are , we grant them an equal status and we give them back the dignity that history has stripped them off

Moreover , I would like to point out that prostitution exists not just because there is a demand for it , but also because prostitutes are driven to it by circumstance . In the first place , women who have other options to earn a living will not go into prostitution . But more often than not , women who do get into the business of prostitution are forced because of their situation in life , usually out of poverty . At times they are brought into it , through sex trafficking , but always the bottom line is they need the money . This being the case , I believe that we should treat prostitution as we would any other kind of labor . It is a specialized service , and those who...
