North Atlantic Treaty The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO ) was established due to North Atlantic Treaty which was signed in Washington D .C . in 1949 . It aims to protect the North Atlantic Area from Soviet invasion . When it was signed , the treaty only covered the areas of Belgium , Netherlands Luxembourg , France , United Kingdom , United States , Canada , Portugal Italy , Norway , Denmark , and Iceland . In 1952 Greece and Turkey became part of the organization followed by West Germany in 1955 and Spain in 1982 . And 1999 , Czech Republic , Hungary , and Poland joined . And April

br 2004 , Bulgaria , Estonia , Latvia , Lithuania , Romania , Slovakia , and Slovenia joined the NATO (Rosenberg , 2004
Americans and Europeans had a disagreement on the areas covered by the treaty . In the early years of the NATO , it only covers the area where member country is . It was resolved by amending article VI of the treaty . The treaty helps the Europeans to avoid a Soviet Invasion . It is because the treaty indicates that an attack on a member or a party of members of NATO is an attack to whole alliance . The Soviet Union did not attack Europe because it didn 't want to wage war against the United States of America
The NATO had been questioned through its existence . It is said that European countries will be better that if they don 't follow the lead of the United States , since the Soviet Union had been disbanded since 1991 European countries can defend their selves now in their current state They have enough resources to support their selves . And most especially we don 't want great countries following s from a single country even it is the strongest of all NATO countries
