The Concept of Community

The word community has its roots in the Latin word `communis ' which implies "common , public , shared by all or many " A community is a collection of all living things (people , animals , and even plants ) that share a common environment , thereby forming a recognizable group ( Communities ' pars . 1-3 . Within communities , the living things specially the people do not spend their time in seclusion or isolation They interact by sharing their happiness and sad moments . They depend on

each other . Their behaviors , beliefs , values and customs are generally common , but if not , still these are respected . The communities are often so knitted together than one bad thing is likely to affect all . Like in a small community , if one person starts using drugs , the whole community is likely to be effected . Similarly good and healthy habits will have positive impact on the whole community . When different communities share a common purpose and become interdependent , they form societies . This has been designed to scrutinize the concept of community in the overall scenario of a civilized society . The will focus on how the communities are established , what binds them , and what are their benefits and pitfalls

Communities can exist any where such as in residential areas workplaces , and even in the virtual world of internet . A strong and cohesive sense of community is essential to expanding opportunity for all . When we care about the progress of all members of our society opportunity is no longer just about personal success but also about our success as a people . Policymakers , community leaders , researchers , and the business community are increasingly recognizing the importance of social capital to the economic and social health and well-being of groups ranging from small communities to large nations . Research on social capital has found associations between the strength of informal networks and the success of organizations , the safety of neighborhoods and the health of individuals and whole communities . For example research has found an association between social capital and levels of crime and violence in communities . Communities that have fewer informal social ties and lower levels of trust and cohesion also face higher rates of serious and violent crime (Sampson et al 224-232

Not all communities are the same . Communities are distinguished by having enough participants in a group caring for the common good and developing a sense of community , in which they give of themselves . An important factor is to keep a balance between self-interest and shared interests . Continuity of association is the essence in a community setup . Communities can only progress and develop if there are strong and lasting ties between their members . Benefits from such connections become source of attraction for other members of the community who do not contribute much towards the betterment of community .
