It is imperative that one discusses what community policing is and where did the concept come from and how has the modern world warmed up to the idea and how this philosophy has evolved over a period of time Community policing is a concept that has long existed in the human society and the basic means that it looks forward to achieve is the problems that a community is facing is solved through the interaction of the community and the police i .e . the community is made partly responsible for

solving the problems by letting or sharing their information with the police department , the need for such a model arose first when in metropolitan cities people felt alienated from the police department , the model seeks to follow the concept which is more inherent in the rural areas where the local police knows each and every one and every one knows the sheriff . but it was far more difficult for people to know who to go to for the their problems when it came to cosmopolitan or metropolitan cities and hence the idea of community policing was born . How does community policing work or what do community police officers do ? Basically the community police officers are individuals who have been trained by the police and they have expertise in patrolling particular areas and regions and solving problems of their respective communities , in addition to this they have the full back up o the state or district or federal police in case they need it and hence it makes community police a very potent force . It is also imperative to mention the components of what community policing consists of or what are the basic ingredients for a good community police or team , the components are mentioned below

External Elements

The external elements are the elements that exists outside of the organization of community police but the less are extremely important because they dictate the need for having the community police in the first place , the external elements consist of

-Involvement of the public , the main theory of community based policing is that the whole community or the public should be involved in the process , the community should be considered a team and involved in the policing of the area for this purpose the police needs to actively survey the people who would be of help and who would provide information that would be helpful and that would help prioritize the problems of the community . What this does is that it empowers the community , give them a sense of owner ship that they can solve the problems by just simply identifying them and this goes a great way in helping to restore the confidence of the public in the police department on the whole but is has to be kept in mind that just creating a community police department would not help , rather the community department would have to be actively engaged and should be easily approachable by the people...
