Paper Topic:

communication and audience(simpsons tv show and cosmopolitan magazine)

Introduction

I have selected Simpsons TV show and Cosmopolitan magazine . I use them regularly and hope that I can explain why I prefer them . When I first time saw Simpsons I understood that this is social satire which makes people (and me ) laugh theirselves , but also it is simply good fun . When I first time had read Cosmopolitan I felt that I like its design and articles . Watching Simpsons TV show or reading popular magazines are the examples of communication process and I am an element /functional unit of the audience in

this communication

The nature of the audience has produced many quandaries and debates Let 's discuss a dialectic of the idea that the audience is a mass public versus a small community . The audience should be thought of as a mass public or a small community . Some scientists consider that the audience is a great , undifferentiated mass that can be molded by the media (Littlejohn , 2002 . They think that rapid technological and transportation developments in addition to economic considerations have caused people to become increasingly interdependent , yet at the same time increasingly estranged from one another . Also , it is believed by some that morals , tastes , and values decline when society becomes a huge amalgamation that is no longer led by the elite . On the other hand those that take the community approach see audiences as discriminating members of small groups who are influenced mostly by their peers . The theorists on this side of the argument feel that the audience cannot be characterized as an amorphous mass . Each community is diverse and possesses its own interests , ideas , and values . In these populations media content is interpreted within a socially constructed framework of meanings , and individuals are influenced less by the media than their peers

The second main area of dispute centers on the notion that audiences can be either passive or active . According to Littlejohn , the passive-audience view suggests that people are easily and directly influenced by the media . In contrast , the active audience viewpoint proposes that people make more active decisions about how to use media According to Frank Biocca , there are five characteristics that can be used to classify active audiences . There are selectivity utilitarianism , intentionality , involvement and imperviousity to media influence

The Simpsons are the brainchild of Matt Groening . They appeared in the Tracey Ullman show in 1989 . It was minute long "buffer " cartoons showing before and after commercials . So , the Simpsons has been on our screens for nearly 15 years . They were awarede many times and still remains the best thing on television
