The colossus in the kitchen

The story Colossus in the Kitchen ' is about Tandi , a black South African woman who worked as a cook in a kitchen . According to the author , she is a picture of a strong person , a dominant figure in the place she belongs . The author 's point of view was as a child , that 's why she looks at people as giants , just like how she views Tandi . Tandi is viewed by the author as a colorful character , wherein she has traits that

sets her apart from normal women

Tandi is described as a black peasant class woman , wherein she works as a helper , a cook , in a rich household . As a peasant , she grew up not having much of a grasp in education , leaving her at the pits of illiteracy at that time . But that doesn 't mean that she 's a good for nothing peasant . Tandi is said to speak five languages competently , a clear sign of her well above intelligence . Tandi is also characterized as fun loving and cheerful , as the author tells about how Tandi is quick to laugh , and would also sing about her experiences . Tandi 's life however is not all but a walk in the park . She has experienced a great deal of pain with being separated from his husband at the time when she needs him most : her pregnancy . Adding to that , the baby she was carrying died a day after being born . In the advent of marginalization and discrimination , Tandi was one of the victims , as the author described as being looked down as those who deserve a hard life as a punishment to a crime . Their only crime was the belief that there could be equality for the human kind , and has their own sense of dignity

Tandi is considered as a colossus in the kitchen because of her personality . Despite the way people look at her , she remained big in herself , since she never ceased to believe about the concept of equality between people . Being a colossus doesn 't necessarily mean that you have to be big in size and that you have to have power greater than other people . In this story , being a colossus depends on the person 's belief that they are able to withstand the sways of other people 's influences And Tandi was that kind of person , a very strong-willed character , a real colossus
