My interviewee is a recent graduate from the University of Leeds She studied English and is now pursuing postgraduate study at the university . She compares her experience fondly to that of previous school years . She says it was a life changing experience and that university provided her with a strong foundation for her future

If one compares to colonial years it is easy to see vast differences

Mass education vs . upper class education

Mass education is a thing

of present day where everyone is entitled to education . Student loans and bursaries help one achieve that and parents help further their children 's ambition . In colonial days it was only the rich upper class who could afford to send their children to university and university was for the upper classes (Thelin , 2004 ) A builder 's son would learn the trade from his father . It was unheard of for a maid 's son to go to university The girl I interviewed would feel strongly if such discriminations were made today . University former was a welcoming experience where she made friends with people from different backgrounds rich and poor without realising the differences . Everyone seemed to have a budget regardless of what their family background was and we all went out clubbing or drinking , she says . If they ran out of money it was simple to just find some work or wait till they got the next sum of money from their student loan

In colonial times religion played a strong role in education and Christian faith was a part of everyday teaching . There were prayers before and after classes but that has all changed today . George m Marsden a prominent historian and many others have argued that religion has an important place in higher education and shouldn 't be ignored (Thelin , 2004

A woman 's place

Women were excluded from colleges . Although in 1761 king 's college allowed the families of stewards and faculty to reside in the college in 1763 the board of governors abolished this practice noting that no woman under any pretence whatever (except a cook ) be allowed to reside in the college in the future (Vine , 2007

Infact in those days a woman 's place was in the home . My interviewee an Asian girl finds this a pleasant change .Today 's colleges have women in the faculty , administration and as students . Infact there are more women then men in may a classroom . Women are part of today 's workforce and make an important contribution in academic and other fields of life . It is an important step of progress that has been made by giving women higher education . It has also changed much of the campus life as there are more social activities and more relationships created . In today 's world women need to be educated and colonial times denied them of this It has made life on campus more colourful and has changed society profoundly
