Death seems to be a mystery for man . Man is not only scared of the pain and the disintegration of the body associated with death , but also of the dread and mystery death has to offer . The United States is one of the developed nations of the World that still permits death penalty . Between , 1972 and 1977 , death penalty had temporarily been suspended , but was restored by Courts . Since colonial times , more than 13 ,000 people have been given death sentence in the US The execution rate dropped down significantly from the 1930 's , but did not stop completely . The practice was stopped in 1972 by the Supreme Court but again resumed in 1976 . However , several states in the US have opted out of instituting capital punishment in their legal systems . At the moment , Texas performs the largest number of executions , whereas Virginia executes a highest percentage of the population compared to any other US State . The US public has a mixed response to capital punishment , but it is similar to Canada , where it is completely abolished . Studies have shown that the people executed more often could not afford a proper lawyer in their defense . An interesting finding in the US , shows that the murder rates in states having an option for death penalty significantly higher in those states not having such an option This may be due to two apparent factors , namely , people would find that in such states the value of life is cheapened due to the state policy or a higher criminal rate may inherently exist due to several contributory factors (such as socio-economic status , education levels poverty , etc .
