Various military conflicts have been witnessed throughout the American history . Howard Zinn explores these events in his non fiction book `A people 's history of the United States ' and examines their significance . One of these conflicts is the Mexican-American war which the main reason was expansionism . This was a military conflict between Mexico and the United states which commenced in the year 1846 and lasted up to 1848 . Mexico had inherited the Atla California , Texas and Nuevo Mexico provinces from Spain after it

gained independence the Spanish empire . However due to its bankruptcy and weaknesses that were a result of its war of independence , it was difficult to govern these provinces since they were miles away from its capital . This led the Mexican government to allow a few US families to settle in b region of Texas in to better control it . The inability of the Mexican government to control the b however led to the settlement of more Americans than it had anticipated . The English speakers soon formed the majority in Texas and the US government offered to buy Texas from the Mexican government . The Mexican emperor however strongly opposed the sale of any territory . On the other hand Texans were very disappointed with the government due to deployment of convicted criminals as soldiers in Texas .
