The new consumerism weakened previous dominant influences that existed in the society Consumers embraced the new culture , and there were changes in gender roles , customs and general behaviour especially among the youth Consumerism has helped the Chinese convey their individual tastes likings and values . Sophistication and modernism are the trends displayed in Chinese culture . Changes in dietary preferences with urban dwellers opting for fast food instead of local cuisine have been noticed . Fashion trends among the youth have diverted from previous traditional styles that were more conservative and bent towards religious and social restrictions and requirements . The trends conveyed now are meant to show sophistication , modernity and go against most religious teachings and rules .
