Children are considered the world 's hope because they are the ones who will continue the activities of man in this world , when the old ones are gone . That in turn , requires them to be educated and developed in to be an asset to the society . However , the prevalence of child abuse has impeded a lot of children today from growing into their full potential

Basically child abuse began with the case with Mary Ellen Wilson . Mary Ellen Wilson 's tragic story erupted in 1874 , when she was found maltreated by her stepmother who was physically hitting her and letting her suffer in hunger (Wolfe 1 . After her story was told , rights of the children were protected and the term child abuse evolved

To protect the children from abuses , the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act was enacted in 1974 . This act provided federal funds to fight child abuse for the states that passed laws requiring certain professionals , such as teachers and health care personnel , to report suspected abuse (De Koster Swisher 12 . In addition , the law also provides grants to public agencies and non-profit organization for demonstration programs (Siegel and Welsh 172 .This law has also given initiative for the states to counteract child abuse . However , despite the enactment of the law , child abuse is still prevalent in most parts of the country

Physical abuse involves physical contact with the child , which may include throwing , stabbing , burning drowning , suffocating , biting , or deliberately disfiguring the child (Sigel Welsh 166 . Physical abuse is the most often form of maltreatment being employed by parents to their children . Emotional abuse , on the other hand , is manifested by constant criticism and rejection of the child (Sigel Welsh 166 .
