It has been more than a decade since Proposition 187 was approved by the people of California , however , its effect continues to linger in American immigration laws . Out of the 58 counties in the state of California , 50 counties affirmed the proposition . The eight counties which opposed it are those counties in the San Francisco Bay

The proposition aims to curb the growing number of illegal aliens in the state by depriving them

of public education as well as public health care services . The proponents believe that through this process , the illegal immigrants will be discouraged to stay in the country . They also believe that this will work for the betterment of California 's economy since there would be no undocumented aliens who will be sharing in their tax funded public benefits and taking jobs which are supposed to be for American citizens . The proposition aimed to create a state-run system that would verify the legality and illegality of aliens .
