Poverty is one of the most critical problems that affect the society today . Poverty is an affliction that has affected people in various parts of the world since time immemorial , and it still is a major concern today . By definition , poverty is the inability of a people to afford the basic needs in life such as food , clothing , shelter , a quality education , health care among others . The first cause of poverty is the prevailing economic environment in areas characterized by rampant poverty (The Word Bank 25 . Some countries or communities might lack the natural and artificial resources that they would exploit to fulfill the economic needs of their citizens leading to a persistent state of lacking and extreme poverty (Jennings and Kushnick 3 . For example , the absence of minerals and petroleum and other resources makes people have a very hard time generating the monetary resources necessary to meet their basic needs . Such communities are left to depend on agriculture and when rain fails and there is no alternative source of water to use in agriculture , then the people become impoverished (World Bank . Such scenarios are particularly common in some parts of the African and Asian continents
