The war basically started just after the republican victory in the

1860 election with Abraham Lincoln being elected as the president of the Union government and his swearing , in early March 1861 . Political temperatures had been heightened during the election campaign period with both the south and the North campaigning on platforms with Lincolns campaign centralizing on probable emancipation of the slaves in America and was categorical on not allowing slavery to extend beyond the states that it existed . While the opposing side fought for the maintenance of the status quo , hence the basis of the war that eventually ended with the surrender of the Confederate army in 26th May 1865 ,resulting to the death of approximately 620 ,000 people and property worth 5billion being destroyed , and at the same time freeing around 4 million black slaves (Fellman , 2007 ,
