The Catcher in the Rye is a story of Holden Caulfield , himself as narrator . It is written by J .D . Salinger released in 1951 . It tells about Holden 's criticism of the world and how he isolated himself from the rest afte he was dismissed from Pencey Prep because of academic failure . Holden 's

argument was about how he saw the world as full of hypocrisy full of pretense , which he called phoniness . It seems that he hated the people in his environment because he thought that they were deceitful and corrupt . All throughout the story , it seems that was wandering all along yet he cannot find any satisfaction

After his expulsion , he moved to New York where he met several people and had experiences that added more to his depression . Along the way , he met Ernest Morrow , mother of his antisocial bully classmate . He found her attractive despite her age and invited her for a drink , but she refused his offer . He invited another girl for a drink he just knew by name , but again he was refused . He went to the Lavender Room where he tried to fit with the some of the people there . He attempted to mingle with some of the women and danced with each of them . He continually visited some places in New York and went to Ernie 's bar He got drunk and soon left thinking there are many phonies ' there Back to the hotel , he met Maurice who was an elevator boy . Holden was offered a prostitute for five bucks . When he saw Sunny , the young prostitute , it made him more depressed because he cannot bear to have sex with her . Instead , he paid her and told her that he had just gone on a surgical operation

The following day , he had a date with Sally Hayes who was her ex-girlfriend . They watched a performance of The Lunts and went to Rockefeller Center for ice skating . After that , they had a conversation which turned into a fight thus making him more depressed . He thought that they nothing much in common

He decided to visit her sister , Phoebe , and bought a record of the artist she liked . Unfortunately , it fell and broke . He didn 't stay long at their house and went to Mr . Antolini , his former teacher . There , he listened to his speech about how to live a happy life and it seemed that he understood Holden very much . Holden fell asleep for a while but when he woke up...
