THE CATCHER IN THE RYE INTRODUCTION
Since being published in 1951 , The Catcher In the Rye , written by J .D .
Salinger has been a hot topic for debate and controversy . Although the
novel has been the target of criticism , it has also been the topic of
wide discussion . The novel follows the life of sixteen year old , Holden
Caulfield for three days on a rebellious trip following his expulsion
from a boarding school he was attending . During his trip , Holden
reflects on events which have impacted him . The book offers an insight
to the struggles of growing up that most teenagers may deal with at one
time or another .
THESIS STATEMENT
The novel , The Catcher In the Rye , should not be banned from inclusion
in the literature courses taught at the high school level .
REASONS WHY IT SHOULD NOT BE BANNED
Since the novel 's publication in 1951 , J .D . Salinger 's ``The Catcher in
the Rye ' has functioned as a conflagration for debate and controversial
extremities . Despite the novel being a prey for criticisms that are
scornful , it has also served as a subject matter of wide discussion .
Portraying the life of Holden Caulfield who is a sixteen year old , the
novel displays the psychological battle of Holden within himself which
plays as the tool that bares the coming-of-age novel 's implicit themes
of depression , teen angst , and the disingenuous society 's nature .
Tackling the issues of teenage sex , blatant profanity and other erratic
behavior , the novel raised a lot of criticisms and ignited questions
whether the book is worth banning or not .
To generalize the matter of banning literature , it is proper to refer
to the first amendment of congress which states that Congress shall make
no law respecting an establishment of religion , or prohibiting the free
exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech , or the press , or
the right of the people peaceably to assemble , and to petition the
government for a redress of grievances . This states the right to freedom
of speech . Banning literary works such as the Catcher in the Rye
underlies the conception of this freedom . Those who disagree that it
should be banned from Highschool curriculum clearly does not get the
bigger picture or less , does not appreciate the greatness of the writing
by being focused on the issues .
To further specify the grounds of consideration of censorship and
provide analysis on why the novel deserves to be taught in highschool ,
there is a must to specify the issues and the answers to them . The
issues presented by censorship are the following : role modeling ,
hypocrisy , profanity , sexual thoughts and behavior , homosexuality ,
family values , religious beliefs and attitude towards life . With regards
to these issues , there are grounds to eradicate them by citing
appropriate reasons within the novel .
Regarding the issue of role modeling , the censor asserts that Holden
Caulfield is an obnoxious , self-absorbed , indolent , unthankful twerp
with a foul mouth and an attitude that is negative . The counter-argument
to this is that...
